Automated urinalysis systems streamline the testing of urine samples for a variety of health indicators. These instruments use fluidic systems to aspirate the sample, dispense it onto test strips or into flow cells, and handle wash and waste fluids. The pumps within these systems are responsible for all fluid movement, making them key to the analyzer's speed and accuracy.

The Engineering Challenge

Pumps in urinalysis analyzers must be able to handle urine samples and various chemical reagents with high reliability. A key challenge is preventing clogs and buildup from the salts and particulates that can be present in urine samples. The pumps must provide accurate dispensing of sample onto test pads and efficient washing of fluidic lines to prevent carryover between samples. As with all clinical analyzers, long-term, maintenance-free operation is essential to maximize instrument uptime.

The Thomas Solution

Thomas liquid pumps are well-suited for fluid handling tasks in automated urinalysis. Our Liquid Diaphragm Pumps can be configured with chemically resistant materials and are robust enough to handle the challenges of biological samples. For applications where precise, contamination-free reagent dispensing is the priority, our Peristaltic Pumps offer an excellent solution, simplifying the fluid path and making maintenance as easy as changing a tube. The compact and modular design of Thomas pumps allows for streamlined integration into benchtop analyzers, optimizing space without sacrificing performance.
