Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, involves a range of technologies (FDM, SLA, SLS, MJ) that require precise environmental control and material handling. Pumps and compressors are used for critical functions such as extracting potentially harmful fumes and particulates from the build chamber, providing inert gas environments, or pneumatically conveying powdered materials.

The Engineering Challenge

Designing pumps for 3D printers presents unique hurdles. These pumps must be reliable and compact, fitting seamlessly within the machine's footprint. For fume and particulate extraction, a vacuum pump needs to deliver ample airflow for operator safety without disrupting the print. When working with inert gases like nitrogen or argon, pumps must be leak-free to maintain atmospheric control. Powder-based systems (SLS) demand robust pneumatic conveying capable of handling fine particulates. Additionally, low noise and vibration are often crucial for maintaining a comfortable lab or office environment. Finally, Material Jetting (MJ) requires highly precise pumps for accurate material dispensing and efficient waste removal from print heads.

The Thomas Solution

Thomas offers a versatile range of oil-less pumps and compressors suitable for various 3D printing applications. Our compact and quiet Gas Diaphragm Pumps are an excellent choice for fume extraction, providing consistent vacuum in a small footprint. For systems requiring higher flow or pressure for material conveying or chamber purging, our WOB-L® Piston Pumps deliver powerful, oil-free performance. For material handling, our liquid diaphragm and peristaltic pumps offer precise and reliable fluid transfer capabilities. The reliability and long life of Thomas pumps ensure that the 3D printer's auxiliary systems perform flawlessly, protecting the quality of the print.
