Immunoassay analyzers are essential tools for detecting and quantifying a wide range of analytes, from hormones to infectious disease markers, using highly specific antibody-antigen reactions. The fluidics system automates complex assay steps, including sample and reagent dispensing, incubation, washing, and signal detection, where pump precision is critical for accurate results.

The Engineering Challenge

Immunoassay fluidics present several challenges. Pumps must dispense microliter volumes of expensive reagents with very high precision (often <0.5% CV) to ensure assay reproducibility and control costs. They must be highly compatible with salt-based buffers and detergents that can cause crystallization and lead to leaks or pump seizure in lesser designs. In wash steps, pumps must provide both pressure to dispense wash buffer and vacuum to aspirate it completely, minimizing background signal. Low pulsation is required to prevent splashing and cross-contamination between wells.

The Thomas & TriContinent Solutions

Thomas offers a portfolio of precision pumps to meet the diverse needs of immunoassay analyzer OEMs. Our TriContinent Syringe Pumps are a premier solution for reagent dispensing, delivering unparalleled, drift-free accuracy and exceptional repeatability for critical fluid handling. Designed to minimize crystallization and withstand exposure to aggressive chemicals, these pumps ensure long-term reliability in demanding applications. For wash stations, our Mixed-Operation Diaphragm Pumps can be configured to provide both wash buffer dispensing and waste aspiration from a single unit, simplifying system design and saving space. Additionally, our Peristaltic Pumps offer a contamination-free option for reagent handling, with smooth, consistent flow and easy maintenance.
