Blood gas analyzers provide physicians with time-critical data on a patient's respiratory and metabolic status by measuring pH, pCO2, pO2, and electrolytes from a small whole blood sample. The fluidics system is responsible for precisely moving the blood sample to the sensors and transporting calibration and rinse solutions, making the pump a critical component for analytical accuracy.

The Engineering Challenge

The pump in a blood gas analyzer must handle multiple fluids—the blood sample, wash solutions, and calibration standards—without causing cross-contamination. It must aspirate a precise sample volume (typically 70-140 microliters) and transport it with a smooth, pulsation-free flow to ensure stable readings at the electrodes. Any pulsation can disrupt the sample slug and lead to inaccurate measurements. The pump must be highly reliable to ensure the analyzer is always ready for emergency use, and its internal components must be compatible with the various reagents used.

The Thomas Solution

Thomas offers several pump technologies ideal for the complex fluidic requirements of blood gas analyzers. Our Liquid Peristaltic Pumps are an excellent choice, using disposable tubing to move samples and reagents, which completely eliminates cross-contamination and simplifies maintenance. For systems requiring integrated pressure and vacuum for sample handling and washing, our dual-head Gas Diaphragm Pumps can be configured to perform both functions in a single, compact unit. These pumps, driven by precision BLDC motors, provide the low-pulsation flow necessary for stable, accurate sensor readings.
